Who is calling?

Salam Deenpreneurs,

In my previous article, I shared about Calling vs Career vs Job: https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/calling-vs-career-job-maruf-yusuf–ijjoc

In this article, I would like to expand on this a bit more.

More specially, who is calling and for what?

Before we get to the question, let me tell you another story. This time it is not fiction but a true story. My life story.

I was born in Uzbekistan, where Imam Al Bukhari is from. I lived there for the first 20 years of my life.

When I was 20, I traveled to Denmark to study. I had only $7 in my pocket.

For the next 10 years, I chased the things of this world (dunya). Alhamdulillah, I established a family with three kids. I got a house and a car. It seemed I had everything. Yet something, or rather Someone, was missing in my life.

For the last 10 years, I have been doing my best to fill that gap and to start listening and responding to my soul’s longing for God. That same longing is within each one of us.

I realized that for the first part of my life, all the books, movies, and media that I consumed had all made Allah (SWT) seem irrelevant, far away, and separate from everyday life.

In the last 10 years, I have talked to thousands of Muslim entrepreneurs, professionals, and community members from all walks of life. I noticed a similar pattern. They all read similar books and watched similar movies and media. They also felt a big void in their lives, just the way I did.

Even though we are Muslims, alhamdulillah, somehow somewhere we started to “believe” the secular stories and suggestions in these books, movies, and media that tell us that Allah (SWT) is not part of, or relevant to, our success. Some of us willingly and sometimes subconsciously start to limit our awareness of Allah (SWT). We only remember Allah when we go to the masjid, or in similar cases. I was one of them, unfortunately.

What we say in our prayers doesn’t match what we do in life.

Yet that call/invitation from Allah SWT is all around us. It is calling us if we listen to it with our hearts open. This is embedded in each of us. This is why each of us is drawn to stories, movies, and books. This is why when against all odds a hero rises up to the challenge, we all immerse ourselves in it.

Then the question is: what are we going to do about this?

What are you going to do about this call?

This is the question worth thinking about.

Let me know your thoughts.

See you in the next article.
