12 / 99 – Al Bari: The Evolver

Have you ever wondered about the incredible diversity of life—the countless species of plants, animals, and even the subtle differences within humanity itself? These distinctions aren’t accidental. They’re the work of Al-Bāri’, The Evolver, The One who creates everything in perfect harmony. Today, let’s explore this beautiful name and its profound meaning in our lives.

Story: Reflecting on Trees—The Creation of Al-Bāri’

Take a moment to think about the trees we see around us. Scientists have cataloged over 60,000 species of trees—and these are just the ones we know of! Each species serves a unique purpose. Some provide timber, others produce fruit, while many are sources of medicine.

This isn’t just a coincidence; it’s the intentional work of Al-Bāri’. Each tree, though different, is perfectly suited for its environment and role. Now imagine not just the trees but all of creation—each element designed with precision and purpose. Allah, Al-Bāri’, made it all.

Meaning and Context

Al-Bāri’ comes from the root B-R-A, which means to create, fashion, or evolve something in a way that is free from imperfection. Allah as Al-Bāri’ is the One who creates with precision, bringing everything into existence in perfect proportion.

In Surah Al-Hashr, Allah says:
‘He is Allah, the Creator, the Inventor, the Fashioner; to Him belong the best names.’ (Quran 59:24)

This name also highlights Allah’s ability to distinguish and differentiate between His creation. Every creature and every detail in this universe reflects His wisdom and power.

Evolution and the Missing Links

Many people look to the theory of evolution for answers about how life came to be. While evolution highlights the adaptation and variation within species, it still has significant gaps—often called ‘missing links’—that cannot fully explain the origin of life or its incredible complexity.

Nothing happens by chance. The intricate systems in nature, from the DNA in our cells to the balance of ecosystems, point to the work of Al-Bāri’. Allah is the True Evolver, creating and shaping life with purpose and wisdom. While adaptation is part of His design, it is He who initiates and sustains life in all its forms.

Practical Reflection

How can we connect with Al-Bāri’ in our daily lives?

  1. Reflect on Diversity in Creation: Spend time contemplating the intricate details of Allah’s creation—whether it’s the structure of a tree, the design of an animal, or the complexity of the human body. These differences aren’t random; they’re signs of Allah’s perfect artistry.
  2. Celebrate Human Differences: Allah created us into nations and tribes to know and appreciate one another, not to see ourselves as superior or divided. Let this inspire you to embrace and respect the uniqueness of others.
  3. Recognize the Creator in Evolution: When you hear about scientific theories, reflect on how Allah’s names, like Al-Bāri’, manifest in the processes of life. Science uncovers the ‘how,’ but Allah is the ‘Who’ behind it all.
  4. Protect Allah’s Creation: As caretakers of this earth, preserving the environment and its biodiversity is an act of worship. Recognize this responsibility as a way of honoring Al-Bāri’.
