Born in Tunisia in the 9th century, Fatima al-Fihri was a devout and visionary Muslim woman who changed the world through her passion for education and community development. In 859, she founded the University of Al-Qarawiyyin in Fez, Morocco, starting with a simple mosque and transforming it into the first degree-granting institution in the world! πβ¨
Fatima and her sister Maryam turned this pioneering university into a beacon of knowledge, offering courses in everything from natural sciences and geography to writing and Qur’anic studies. So, what was her motivation behind doing this? A deep desire to share the principles of Islam and the profound value of education, perhaps inspired by the Qur’anic verse: ‘Read in the name of your Lord’ (96:1) π.
Fast forward 1200 years, and the University of Al-Qarawiyyin is still thriving, standing tall as a symbol of our enduring quest for knowledge. Fatima’s legacy is a reminder of how one person’s vision can make a lasting impact on the world π. Let’s celebrate her incredible contribution to education and the continued pursuit of wisdom!
